The Aloha Tower Development Corporation (ATDC) was established in 1981 to redevelop land surrounding the historic Aloha Tower in downtown Honolulu. The Aloha Tower Complex is part of a master plan created as a stimulus for economic activities on the ocean front State lands within Honolulu Harbor. The plan is to achieve economic growth by:
The centerpiece of this development, the historic Aloha Tower, was completed in 1926. At completion, and for forty years, Aloha Tower was the tallest building not only in Honolulu, but also in Hawaii. With many high rise office complexes darting the skyline of Honolulu today, Aloha Tower still stands out as truly one of the most recognized landmarks of this great city. After going through extensive renovations in 1999, Aloha Tower is opened to the public seven days a week. Guided tours conducted in either English or Japanese are available free of charge. For more information, please visit www.alohatower.com.
Besides the Aloha Tower Marketplace, the project complex may include a component devoted to providing office space, a residential complex as well as cruise ship terminals and possibly a boutique hotel. The current development boundary of the project area includes Piers 5 and 6, and Piers 8 through 14. The corporation has teamed up with several planning and development professionals to remake the decade old development plan. The product is expected to lay the groundwork for additional development opportunities.
The Corporation is governed by a Board of Directors consisting of seven members with the day to day operation headed by its executive director who is assisted by a staff of two. The Marketplace is also an active participant in the Honolulu Downtown Hoolaulea which is an annual event that takes place in September. Thousands of party revelers gather downtown for food and entertainment. The Marketplace also celebrates the Fourth of July and New Year's Eve with fireworks displays.
